A comprehensive set of mathematical instruments arranged in four tiers in a hardwood case, made for Sir Roger North, lawyer, historian and amateur architect… . Case 15¼ x l0¼ x 4½ (360 x 260 x lI5mm). c.1680. Jesus College, Cambridge.
(top tray) a sector with arched joint, a calculating rule for military purposes, a large pair of compasses, a pair of variable proportional compasses, and a pair of triangular compasses and several ink inserts for the large compasses.
(second tray) a boxwood sliding rule, a calculating rule, a square slate framed in boxwood, an angle set square, a pair of pincers, various compasses and a ruling pen and crayon-holder.
(third tray) various inserts for the largest compasses together with a pair of calliper blades, a pair of ink-wells, a whetstone for sharpening the steel points and a boxwood segmental drawing curve.
(fourth tray) a quadrant engraved with Roman numerals, a triangular 60° set square. a Universal dial, a pounce pot and plumb-bob and some cord.
